EXCITED TO SERVE
As Mitch moves to the fourth stage of his recovery, he is looking forward to serving others and honoring God with the rest of his life. For years Mitch battles alcoholism, but with a new life, a better understanding of himself, and a vision of what life can be he is facing the future with realistic optimism.
At his worst, Mitch recalls having a high tolerance to alcohol. It took excessive amounts of liquor to dull his senses and cover his emptiness and loneliness. When I was drinking, it was never one or two drinks. It was so bad that I didn't even really sleep, I just drank until I passed out.
His problems with alcohol go back to when Mitch was in college. I knew I had a drinking problem even then it wasn't normal. Mitch based his self worth on achievement and his relationships with women. When those were okay, Mitch did okay, but when these were failing, he suffered. I just didn't like me.
A skilled and dependable house painter, Mitch recalls the difficulty of stripping old homes with detailed architecture down to the bare wood and starting over with a fresh, new coat and color. That intentional and productive destruction is a good picture of what's happen in Mitch's like since two major changes.
First, when Mitch gave his life to God four years ago his spiritual life changed forever. Sadly, he still struggled with insomnia and panic attacks. He was terribly frustrated having the ability to understand God's truths but continuing to have destructive impulses. Even more difficult was the guilt and conviction of turning from God back to alcohol to combat his negative emotions. Finally in one of his conditions of deep drunkenness he was blessed to be arrested.
The biggest benefit of jail is that they got me some medical attention. As it turned out, Mitch's counselor in jail was a Christian. After working with Mitch he diagnosed Mitch with a chemical imbalance and suggested: You've dealt with your spiritual imbalance already. Now let's work with your chemical imbalance. From that point on, Mitch's physical life has improved in ways he never new before. Encouraged by the ability to think clearly he, Told God I was going to give it all I've got for Him.
After being released Mitch came to the Ministry to put his life back together. Since coming here I appreciate that this is a real discipleship program. Mitch is learning how to balance the big things good and bad with the small, and not to overreact when faced with disappointment or success.
I want to serve God with my whole life. Mitch is intelligent and articulate, and though he senses God's call on his life, he doesn't feel a call to preach. I want to help in a ministry like this one. One that gets down in the trenches of men's lives and helps them make changes.
With two stages left before he graduates, Mitch continues to learn about his true identity, so please pray for his continued growth. He recognizes, The next steps are of crucial importance in my learning how to follow God, and we agree wholeheartedly. We look forward to seeing the many ways God will continue to heal and grow Mitch into the man he wants to be.
