6 WAYS TO HELP A HOMELESS STRANGER
Many people struggle when they see a needy stranger in a public place and have no idea how to really help. Most people don't struggle helping people they know, but when this happens at an interstate exit ramp or outside a store with a complete stranger, things get complicated. Here are a few simple suggestions that might come in handy:
1. Keep a bottle of water and a granola bar or cracker pack for when you encounter someone with a cardboard sign. Giving money may not be the best thing you could do for this person. If someone is truly in need, they will appreciate food.
2. Purchase a $5 gift card that you can share when you encounter a person in need. Gift cards from restaurants that do not serve alcohol can help you know that your gift is being used for its intended purpose.
3. Pray. Many people sell short their spiritual influence. When you are at a loss for a way to help and desire will not go away, take your concern to God and listen to hear his direction in your life.
4. In safe, well-populated locations, greet the poor and homeless eye-to-eye. Everyone likes to be acknowledged.
5. Give monetary gifts to ministries like WCRM with a local ministry hub. By giving locally, you can assure your gift really makes a difference. You might check with someone on the board of directors, take a tour, or volunteer to verify your gift is well placed.
